Week 5 NFC North Fantasy Football Sits/Starts: Two games
Kevin King Jersey , plenty of starts The Chicago Bears have a bye this week and the Green Bay Packers take on the Lions of Detroit, so the NFC North battles will be limited to two contests this week. The Vikings get an NFC Championship game rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Vikings at 1-2-1 and the Eagles at 2-2, both have come out of the gate under-performing. I see this game being a crossroads of sorts for both teams. Become the team that you want to be for the remainder of the season, or fold. Meanwhile at Ford Field, the Packers will be fighting to keep pace with the Bears in the division and the Lions will try to avoid bottoming out under new head coach Matt Patricia. Let’s take a look at who has the best chance to help your teams this week.Green Bay Packers @ Detroit LionsStart: Aaron Jones, RB If you were bold enough to draft Jones in redraft leagues and wait it out until he got his feet back following suspension, I’m hopeful this is when it starts to pay off. Jones was a strong play last week already and should be a legitimate flex play or low-end RB2 play this week. In two games, Jones is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and even impressed with a blitz pickup against the Bills last week. The knock has been that he’s not a strong pass blocker and Jamaal Williams is better at that, but if Jones continues to pick up those blocks and have the ability to pick up first downs in two carries, he should 100% be the workhorse. With Randall Cobb still on the injury report, Ty Montgomery is best served at picking up the slack in the passing game and not taking away carries. Be comfortable starting Jones against the team that ranks last in rushing yards allowed per game. Start: Kerryon Johnson, RBFeels like it could be a good day for running backs. Not only have the Packers made Adrian Peterson look like 2008 Adrian Peterson two weeks ago, but there were spurts in Week 1 where Jordan Howard looked like he was ready to run wild over the Packers defense. Green Bay is ranked 18th in rushing yards allowed per game, but their rush rank by DVOA is 26th. Johnson has largely split carries with LeGarrette Blount, but his situation is similar to that of Aaron Jones’ in terms of being able to do more with those carries. Johnson is averaging 5.7 yards per carry on the season while Blount is averaging a pedestrian 2.7.Sit: Matt Stafford, QBStafford has a great receiving corps at his disposal, but that doesn’t make him infallible. He put together his first game of the season last week with double-digit yards per completion. However
Marquez Valdes-Scantling Jersey White , Dallas is the 26th-ranked team in DVOA against the pass while the Packers are quietly ranked 10th, allowing about 241 passing yards per game. Stafford’s career averages in 15 games against Green Bay are 298 yards per game and roughly two TD’s per contest, but he also averages 1.5 interceptions.Currently, Stafford is the 17th-ranked fantasy quarterback averaging 17.7 ppg. Which is fine, but unless you’re in a two-QB league, there are better options. Minnesota Vikings @ Philadelphia EaglesStart: Jay Ajayi, RBAfter missing a week with a small fracture in his back, Ajayi came back to put together a respectable 15 carries for 70 yards. The back injury worries me a little bit, but apparently it’s something he’s just going to play through with a little pain. I still like Ajayi this week. With Darren Sproles and Corey Clement still nursing injuries, the timeshare at running back last week was 75% Ajayi and 25% Wendell Smallwood (five carries). Minnesota is currently ranked 30th out of 32 teams against running backs. They’ve struggled to keep up with them and have allowed 3.9 yards per carry and over 100 yards per game to opposing running backs. Which brings me to my sit for this game.Sit: Vikings defenseThe Vikings defense is still 90% owned in ESPN leagues, but rank 21st at the position with 6.8 points per game. Losing Everson Griffin is a tough one to swallow and the Vikings offense isn’t making things easier on the defense. Against the Bills, sure, they got walloped by a bad team, but the Vikings only allowed 292 yards on D. Poor field position and bad secondary play has led the defense to be placed in compromising positions. Per Football Outsiders, the Vikings are ranked 28th in DVOA against tight ends and 30th in DVOA against running backs. Both are positions that the Eagles can readily exploit with Ajayi and Zach Ertz. He’s taken the team through a couple of minicamps, said some nice things about some draft picks, and given us a vague outline of what he hopes to accomplish this year. In short
Womens Corey Linsley Jersey , he hasn’t done a lot as head coach. At least, not a lot that we can see from the outside. But sooner or later, the real football will begin. And when it does, it’s only fair that we have some expectations by which we can measure his success. Here’s what we’re expecting from LaFleur in 2019.Paul Noonan - Run too much, but good deceptionI’m conflicted on LaFleur, or at least what I think LaFleur will be. On the one hand, I expect the percentage of Packer runs to increase a fair amount. Some of that is based on LaFleur’s tendencies, part of that is based on a possibly wrong idea that Rodgers will stay in structure more leading to fewer audibles, and part of it is just based on the idea that you can’t pass much more than they did last year.On the other hand, LaFleur does seem to make decent use of that run commitment in terms of willingness to pass out of run-heavy sets. I am a fan of deception, and using run-heavy looks in passing can lead to big plays, and easy passes. I like LaFleur’s potential as a tactician, and given the youth of their receivers, his brand of offensive may be just what they need. I’m don’t expect them to be on par with the 2010-11 glory days, but if the defense improves and Aaron’s Y/A jumps up a yard, that’ll play. Shawn Wagner - Back to the basicsRunning the football is not as popular in today’s NFL as it once was but I, like Paul
http://www.packerslockerroom.com/authentic-marcedes-lewis-jersey , expect the Packers to run plenty in LaFleur’s offense. In describing concepts he is seen in video so far, Aaron Rodgers appears pleasantly excited about getting to work and putting players in positions that best utilize their skill sets.Sounds simple, but it was something Green Bay has really struggled to do on both sides of the ball in recent seasons. While I remain cautious and well aware that the grass is not always greener on the other side, I expect the Packers offense to return to some of the basic concepts (quick inside slants, screen passes, and others) that once made it so highly successful in the early Rodgers years. With Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, and Dexter Williams in the fold, the Packers should have plenty of ground weapons at LaFleur’s disposal to use the running game to set up the pass and create big-play opportunities. Returning to the basics also means helping Rodgers get back to a comfort zone in getting the ball out sooner and trusting his early progressions. That might be easier said than done, but doing so would go a long way in fixing some of the mid-game stalls the unit has gone through over the past two seasons.Whether it is college football or professional football, it can be difficult and sometimes unrealistic to have very high expectations in year one of a coaching change. However, the Packers under LaFleur could do well, especially with an influx of talent in the offseason, in focusing on a more simplistic style of offense and being adaptable to the tools of that talent. Evan “Tex” Western - A more creative and visually interesting offenseThough I’m usually more of a numbers guy, I’m going qualitative rather than quantitative with this question. For years, we have seen Mike McCarthy roll out the slant/flat concept as practically the only route concept to scheme players open in the passing game. Beyond that, it has been “beat your coverage one-on-one.”Matt LaFleur’s history suggests that his offense will be the antithesis of that. Instead of the static formations that McCarthy tended to use
Jermaine Whitehead Jersey , I expect to see the Packers using motion, play-action, leak routes, and stacked receivers, among other ideas, as ways to get players open. That hopefully will be more effective, and for fans it should make for a more interesting-looking offense on the field when the Packers have the football.Jon Meerdink - PlayoffsIf football is a results-oriented business, I think the only way I can fairly set my expectations for Matt LaFleur is by setting the bar for where I think the team needs to end up. The Packers need to be in the playoffs. The last time we saw a Packers playoff game, Matt Ryan was slicing and dicing the secondary (RIP Ladarius Gunter and friends). It’s not a good memory, but it was still the playoffs. And had things gone differently, who knows? The Packers may have been in the Super Bowl. Sure, there may have been just a five percent chance, but that’s five percent higher than their chances have been of making a run in the playoffs the last two years.LaFleur needs to get the Packers back to the level where they at least have a theoretical shot at making the Super Bowl. To get to the Super Bowl, you need to be in the playoffs. That’s what LaFleur needs to do. That’s what I think the expectation should be.
