The 2018 Buffalo Bills had MORE takeaways than the 2017 team. Sorry, I’m still seeing people lament how the takeaways fell off in McDermott’s second year. Rant aside, let’s take a crack at figuring out who will lead the team in interceptions in 2019!
Unlikely to lead the team in interceptionsAnyone on the defensive lineAny rookie or depth playerLorenzo AlexanderThe defensive line is pretty self-explanatory. They’re too close to the quarterback to get in position to pick off most passes. I would like to take the time to remind everyone though that Jordan Phillips seems to have an uncanny knack for tipping passes and could be an asset in interceptions moving forward. Lorenzo Alexander is called out specifically because (spoiler alert) linebackers actually have a decent shot at leading the team in interceptions but Alexander probably won’t be in the mix. Alexander is actually quite good at getting in passing lanes, defending 9 passes and snagging two interceptions in 2018. Alexander is removed from the list because he spends time at defensive tackle and sees less time at linebacker than the two players that see 100% of snaps. And that brings me to why rookie and depth players shouldn’t be expected to lead the team in interceptions. The prime spots to lead in this particular stat are all currently occupied by 100% players. It could happenKevin JohnsonE.J. GainesLevi WallaceTaron JohnsonRafael BushThe first three on the list are in this group rather than the next because there’s a decent chance we see a rotation at cornerback that includes some combination of the three. If that occurs, decreased snap counts hurt their chance to lead the team in interceptions. If one emerges as a clear front runner and can stay healthy it’s quite realistic to think a corner leads the team in interceptions. The next group are the projected defensive backs for nickel based on last season. Taron Johnson is likely more locked in than Rafael Bush but the idea is the same. A nickel defensive back roams a part of the field where interceptions can happen. Despite not playing 100% of snaps it would only take a couple more lucky breaks than normal to lead the team. Last year’s leader had only four interceptions. The three corners mentioned directly above could also find themselves on the top of the heap with a couple lucky breaks. If you’re wondering why Lorenzo Alexander doesn’t get the same consideration here, it’s because he typically plays a little closer to the line, even when assuming linebacker duties. Prime candidatesTre’Davious WhiteJordan PoyerMicah HydeMatt Milano Tremaine EdmundsWith the team leader landing at four interceptions this is a harder stat to predict than most. Corners have typically lagged behind safeties and linebackers in the last four years of McDermott defenses but not so far as to count them out. Tre’Davious White isn’t an average corner either and shouldn’t be counted out of the competition. Linebackers haven’t led a McDermott team in the last four years either, but Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis have had as high as four interceptions in a year White Eddie Yarbrough Jerseys , which tied last season’s leader for the Bills. Matt Milano had three last year, only one off from tying for the lead. Milano outperformed Tremaine Edmunds, but Edmunds led the team in passes defended with twelve. The suggestion here is that both players are around the ball and disrupting lanes enough to have a legitimate shot with this stat. The leader last year with four was Jordan Poyer who tied with Micah Hyde for the lead in 2017 with five apiece. Free safety Kurt Coleman led the Carolina Panthers in 2015 and 2016. While it’s easy to conclude Poyer has the edge as a result, the duo in Buffalo have both shown they can make it happen. Best guessJordan Poyer should be the pick based purely on data, but too many other spots have been within striking distance of the lead to rule them out. Looking at the NFL as a whole, the league leaders are a mish-mash of defensive backs. With only a sprinkling of linebackers in the top 20, it’s fair to think that the McDermott defense gives the position an advantage. For the sake of going on record to revisit these predictions, the best guess is Micah Hyde. Interceptions tend to have some volatility and Poyer leading the team three years in a row can’t be counted on. If Poyer even has one or two less interceptions than the last two seasons he will lose his crown. The next most likely player to take the lead is Hyde http://www.thebillslockerroom.com/authentic-ryan-groy-jersey , who had his down year in 2018 with two interceptions. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Jay Cutler couldn’t escape questions over the Miami Dolphins inconsistencies on offense all season long. The quarterback was busy confronting them again following a 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday that dropped the Dolphins to 6-8 and all but mathematically ended their already slim playoff hopes.Six days after Cutler threw three touchdown passes in a 27-20 win over New England to enjoy one of his best outings with the Dolphins this season, the 12th-year player was busy trying to explain the three interceptions he threw against Buffalo.“I’m not going to make excuses for the way I’ve played or the three turnovers. I’m responsible for all three of them no matter what the situation was,” Cutler said.“We’ve talked about inconsistencies all year,” he added. “When we win, we do a lot of good things right. And when we lose, wo do things like that.”Cutler’s outing mirrored that of a Dolphins season in which the team followed a 4-2 start with a five-game skid. Then, after winning the past two Eddie Yarbrough Jerseys 2019 , Miami endured a familiar meltdown on offense and defense. The Cutler-led offense settled for field goals on its only two drives into Buffalo territory in the first half in a game Miami never led.Down 21-6, Cutler then threw two interceptions on the first two drives of the second half. Then, after punter Matt Haack recovered an onside kick at Miami’s 37 with 28 seconds left, Cutler volleyed a pass that was easily intercepted by Tre’Davious White to seal Buffalo’s win.Running back Kenyan Drake scored Miami’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard run.“It hurts,” offensive tackle Jesse Davis said. “We put ourselves in some bad spots. Got in the red zone twice in and should’ve capitalized on that, so that’s our own fault.”Miami’s defense endured its share of inconsistencies as well. After holding its past two opponents to converting just 1 of 24 third-down attempts, Miami allowed Buffalo to convert 7 of 15. That included two on the Bills opening drive, which running back LeSean McCoy capped with a 4-yard run.“We just made too many mistakes. We allowed them to move the ball White Jordan Mills Jerseys , especially early, give them their momentum and we can’t allow teams to do that,” defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said. “We’ve got to be able to get off the field.”McCoy scored twice, including a 16-yard catch, and with 50 yards rushing became the 30th player to top 10,000 yards.Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor finished 17 of 29 for 224 yards passing, and also had 42 yards rushing, including a 9-yard touchdown run.The Dolphins have had little go right for them since starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill was sidelined by a right knee injury in August Jordan Mills Jerseys 2019 , leading to Cutler being signed. They were also playing their 14th consecutive game after Miami’s opener was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.“Yeah, I’ll think about that later,” Dolphins coach Adam Gase said when asked about the past.Cutler’s inconsistencies are well-documented.He’s never gone more than two games without throwing an interception. And Cutler has had back-to-back interception-free outings just six times — and none since Weeks 2 and 3 of the 2014 season when he was in Chicago. This year, Cutler has 18 touchdowns versus 14 interceptions and been picked off at least once in nine of 12 games.“Good teams find ways to do it game in and game out,” Cutler said. “The young teams and the teams that are struggling to figure it out, they’re going to have to have ups and downs.”131View Gallery Gallery:Miami Dolphins cheerleadersSteve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports | Steve Mitchell
