White David Andrews Jerseys , news broke that Julian Edelman would be signing a two-year contract extension to keep him in New England for what is essentially the remainder of his career. On Thursday morning, The MMQB’s Albert Breer provided the final pieces of the puzzle with regard to the contract's details, allowing for a clear picture of how the deal impacts New England’s salary cap in 2019 and beyond. One thing to note — according to ESPN’s Field Yates, the deal’s per-game roster bonus totals in 2020 and 2021 are $900,000, not $675,000. So it’s likely that Breer simply used Edelman’s 12-game likely to be earned figure from this season and transposed it onto the bonus figures for 2020 and 2021, which isn’t how they are officially listed. The cap hits for per-game bonuses are calculated each season based on active games from the season prior. The contract’s cap hits over the next three seasons:2019: $6,077,6152020: $7,166,6662021: $6,666,668Once Mike Reiss reported on Tuesday that the deal contained an $8 million signing bonus, it became apparent that this extension was never about creating cap space. In fact, the most 2019 cap space it possibly could’ve created was $208,334, had they chosen to drop his salary down to the $930,000 minimum and eliminate all of his incentives, his workout bonus
David Andrews Jerseys 2019 , and his per-game roster bonuses. Instead, by keeping the ten-year veteran’s 2019 bonuses, restructuring his $1 million in incentives, and reducing his salary to an even $1 million, the extension cost the Patriots $666,666 in 2019 cap space. Here’s how Edelman’s 2019 cap charge breaks down:2019 Salary: $1,000,000 — fully guaranteedOld signing bonus proration: $1,535,949New signing bonus proration: $2,666,6662019 per-game roster bonuses: $375,000 — $31,250 per game, LTBE for 12 games2019 offseason workout bonus: $500,000As for the structure of the contract’s incentives, Breer also provided those details.Considering everything he’s provided the Patriots organization since arriving in 2009, it's nice to see the three-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl 53 MVP receive a sizable amount of cash this year. The $8 million signing bonus is part of $12 million fully guaranteed at signing — the other $4 million coming in the form of his 2019 salary and $3 million of his 2020 salary. But don’t let those figures sway you into believing that Tom Brady’s favorite target “finally got paid”. It’s practically the same deal he signed back in 2017, but with a few tweaks to account for his age, like the increase of his per-game roster bonuses from $500
White Patrick Chung Jerseys ,000 to 900,000 per year, and the $7 million in total incentives available over the next three seasons. Both are substantial risk moderators for the team. All told, the $6,166,667 APY on this new deal currently ranks 40th among wide receiver contracts in the NFL — up just one spot from his previous deal’s ranking of 41st. That prior contract extension, which was signed in June of 2017, had an APY of of $5.5 million — or 3.29% of that year’s $167 million league salary cap. This new extension’s APY cap percentage? 3.28%.Whenever the term “team-friendly” is used to characterize a Patriots signing, some feel the urge to jump to the defense of the team, fearing they are being labeled as “cheap”. This is, of course, ridiculous for a litany of reasons too extensive to list here. But when it comes to the business relationship between Julian Edelman and the Patriots, there’s simply no way around it; for reasons that are his own, he has consistently taken below-market deals, and the Patriots organization has benefited tremendously from it.While one could argue that, given his age and the mileage that already exists on his body, the security provided by this extension makes it more player-friendly than any of his past contracts, what can’t be argued is just how exceedingly team-friendly the deal still is. And that’s okay. For a player whose career started — and will eventually end — in Foxborough, it’s never been about anything else.Follow Brian Phillips on Twitter — @BPhillips_SB The first group of players arrived on Sunday, the second one will be in town today." The first wave of players already reported to the New England Patriots’ 2019 camp on Sunday: rookies as well as veterans recovering from injuries arrived at Gillette Stadium to go through initial weigh-ins and physical testing, and either be cleared for camp or placed on one of the available reserve lists. In total, seven of the players checking in took the second route three days ago.The list might grow even further when the remaining players on New England’s roster — veterans not previously recovering from medical issues — report to camp today and go through examinations and the conditioning test. Every player that has not arrived in Foxboro as part of Sunday’s group is expected to participate; the team is not in any contract negotiations prompting players to hold out. That being said, don’t be surprised if not all players get cleared for tomorrow’s first practice. One player that seems like a candidate for that is veteran wide receiver Julian Edelman. The reigning Super Bowl MVP will reportedly miss around three weeks because of a thumb injury, and the Patriots are expected to take the corresponding action today and likely place him on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). Once on the reserve list, Edelman would join seven of his teammates that were already moved there on Sunday:Of course, players can be activated off PUP (and NFI) at any time and are then no longer allowed to rejoin the lists. This means that Edelman — should he indeed open camp on a reserve list, most likely PUP — could be back on the ‘normal’ roster rather quickly. Given the reported status of his injury, however, that is not expected to happen. Instead, he will likely return by mid-August unless there are any setbacks until then.Theoretically, he and the other players on PUP/NFI could remain there until roster cutdowns and beyond, though: at that point, they would be moved from the current active/PUP/NFI list to reserve/PUP/NFI and would have to sit out at least the first six regular season contests. Edelman’s injury won’t call for this, but it might be a more realistic scenario for other players either already on the list or about to be placed there today.Whatever the case, make sure to check Pats Pulpit regularly for all the latest news and updates about the Patriots’ training camp reporting — and much more.
