You are not alone in your desire to work with pets. In fact, the majority of private practice veterinarians work exclusively or mostly with pets. Although job titles vary, most of these professionals classify themselves as a small veterinarian.
Although it may seem like an easy decision to pursue this career path, you should know a typical day for veterinarians working with small animals involves more than just playing and playing. Join us as we take a closer look at what it really means to be a small animal veterinarian.
First, what exactly is a vet micro animal?
Before we delve into the details of what young veterinarians do in animals, it is important to clarify the role. Job title is actually a misnomer.
"When people hear 'little animal', some people think we spend all of our time in gerboas or hamsters," says Dr. Richard Kane, founder and chief of staff at CARE Animal Care Hospital. "While we work with sinus pets, there is a small veterinarian that treats cats and dogs mainly."

The role also extends beyond patient care, because veterinarians spend as much time with pet owners as they do animals. "We are a part-time practitioner, a part-time therapist, and a partial peace guard," explains Dr. Krista Magnifico, owner of the Garrtsville Veterinary Center and the Bubbly Foundation. "It is a lot of hats to wear."
What does a small vet do?
Pet owners have at least a glimpse of what veterinarians do in small animals. One-time visits and annual check-ups are among the most common reasons a pet needs to visit a vet. "Many of the appointments are healthy visits to animals that need vaccination, parasite control, annual blood tests and routine physical exams," says Dr. Kane.
However, many pet owners make unexpected trips to the vet when their friends are not happy. "This requires diagnostic care, talking to pets parents about signs and symptoms, and prescribing medications - often antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications," explains Dr. Kane.
Outside the basics, you may not realize just how much young veterinarians are able to do that and what their huge services are. Mixing and sterilization surgeries are relatively routine, but there are many other procedures and treatment strategies. Small animal veterinarians are involved in cancer treatment, tumor removal, trauma surgery, and much more. "The usual day is very busy," says Dr. Diarra Blue, co-owner of the Seafire Animal Hospital.
